Mongolia

Mongolia is a fascinating country with huge perspectives. About four and a half times the size of Germany, Mongolia has only two neighbor countries, namely Russia in the North and China in the South. Narrowly three million inhabitants live there and thus Mongolia is the most sparsely populated country in the world. The ground vegetation is mostly steppe with partially extreme climate conditions. Still, next to the Gobi Desert, there are also over 1.000 rivers and lakes as well as characteristically alpine landscapes (Altai). Bild: ©svdmolen
Mongolia is a stable parliamentarian democracy with a multi-party system. The Mongolian constitution, which came into effect after the peaceful revolution and after the renunciation from the Sowjet communist system, is based upon the German Grundgesetz and the French Constitution.
Mongolia is one of the richest countries when it comes to raw materials, still only just under a third is geologically explored. Until now 6.000 deposits of 80 different minerals and metals have been discovered, among them coal, copper, uranium, crude oil, gold, silver, calcium fluoride, molybdenum, zinc and diamonds. The Gobi Desert inhabits coal and copper deposits that belong to the world's biggest. A growing importance is assigned to so-called rare earth metals, which are assembled in many key technologies (among them flat screens, mobile telephones, generators for wind-mills, hybrid engine for cars, and in radiology). The huge deposits of raw materials offer a shift in direction as to improve the living conditions of the Mongolian and thus raise the living standard. Because of the abundance of raw materials Mongolia will be one of the fastest growing economies in the world within the next years. Last year the growth of the real GDP was about 6%. For 2011 and 2012, the International Monetary Fund predicts a 10 percent growth. Nevertheless, not all Mongolian citizens benefit from that positive development. One third of the population still lives under the poverty line.
Germany is Mongolia's most important trading partner within the European Union. The trade volume is growing, but with 100 million Euros it is way below its possibilities. Still, there is a huge German interest in an economic and political exchange with Mongolia, which is also shown by visits of three German federal ministers and multiple official visits as well as a visit headed by German chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel in the fall of 2011. In February 2011, the Deutsche Bank together with other partners was assigned to conduct the initial public offer of Erdenes Tavan Tolgoi, one of the biggest coal mines in the world. Further assignments might follow.
Central in the many political and economic talks was the question of collaboration in the fields of mining and infrastructure. In the presence of German chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel and the Mongolian Prime minister several new cooperation treaty were signed, among them a governmental treaty comprising the collaboration in the fields of mining, industry and technology. This treaty builds the frame, within which companies are able to actively conclude contracts themselves.
The most capacious agreement is a treaty between the joint venture partners BBM Operta (Mühlheim an der Ruhr), the Australian Macmahon Holdings Limited and the Mongolian mining corporation Erdenes TT. The contract volume amounts to 1.4 billion US Dollar. It aims at producing 15 tons of coal annually in the South of Mongolia. After difficult negotiations, the acceptance of bid for BBM Opertaa Group can be interpreted as a break-through in the collaboration in mining.
Furthermore, Erdenes TT and Siemens AG signed a collaboration treaty. Siemens was assigned to deliver combustion turbines for a 300 megawatt power plant which is supplying the coal mine Tavan Tolgoi. Another treaty aims at improving the water supply in the capital Ulan Bator. Next to the energy, mining and infrastructure sector, there are manifold chances for cooperation in handcraft, trade of food and non-food products; for example the utilization of the worldwide best offer of cashmere, yak and camel products.
